Fishermen's Energy plans to launch an environmental monitoring buoy 2.8 miles east of Atlantic City. The buoy is planned to remain on-site for a two-year monitoring period in order to validate an offshore site for wind turbine suitability.
The instrumented buoy and mooring system are similar in design to existing buoys operated by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and university programs, according to Fishermen's Energy.
The system will measure wind speed and other environmental conditions, and transmit the information to shore for use in wind farm site assessments. This project has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard.
