Andover, Mass.-based Weather Services International (WSI) and Genscape/Enva have released WindCast IQ, a wind generation forecasting service designed for energy traders.
WindCast IQ combines WSI's weather-forecasting resources with Enva's knowledge of regional power market fundamentals to deliver a wind generation forecasting service with the independent system operator (ISO) level coverage, accuracy and farm-level granularity required by leading market participants, according to the company.
The first WindCast IQ products will cover the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator and the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas – two regions where wind power has significant daily impact on power markets. Each WindCast IQ product gives clients seven-day hourly forecasts of wind generation at the ISO, regional and wind farm level, and is updated throughout the day.
‘Wind power is an important source of clean energy, and getting accurate wind generation forecasts is a growing challenge for all market participants,’ says Ira Scharf, general manager of WSI's energy and risk division.
This product combines WSI's turbine-height wind forecasts and Enva's wind generation models and analysis of grid and market factors. Accuracy is further enhanced through calibration with Genscape's real-time power flow monitors installed at key wind farms, according to the company.
