U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman joined Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy Executive Secretary Marcio Zimmermann Wednesday to launch the inaugural meeting of the U.S.-Brazil Strategic Energy Dialogue.
The initiative, announced by Presidents Barack Obama and Dilma Rousseff during Obama's visit to Brazil in March, aims to help the U.S. and Brazil strengthen their mutual energy security, create new jobs and industries, and reduce carbon pollution, according to the DOE.
Both parties agreed at the meeting on a number of measures, including a "Green Export" trade mission to Brazil to promote U.S. green technologies and services in the Brazilian market, and a workshop within the next year to assess opportunities for the increased development and deployment of midsize wind energy technologies.
"The Strategic Energy Dialogue builds on the long history of energy cooperation between the U.S. and Brazil to advance our shared energy goals," said Poneman. "Working together, we can help grow our economies, enhance regional and global energy security, and build a clean energy future for both of our nations."
