UpWind Installs Vortex Generators To Increase Energy Production

0

Operations and maintenance service provider UpWind Solutions says it has developed a cost-effective solution for increasing annual energy output.

UpWind – in partnership with Smart Blade and 3M – has developed a device called a vortex generator (VG). The company says VGs cost-effectively improve the cross flow on wind turbine blades, resulting in an estimated 1% to 3% increase in annual energy production. When several hundred VGs are installed on wind turbine blades, they can improve aerodynamic efficiency and can increase the power generated by the turbines. The product can be installed efficiently and optimized for different blade profiles.

To date, UpWind has installed the technology at six wind farms owned by BP Wind, including Flat Ridge 1 in Kansas and Sherbino II in Texas.
