The energy division of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.-based Tyco Electronics has introduced a new family of high amperage aluminum ShearBolt splice connectors. These new ShearBolt connectors allow wind farm contractors to quickly and reliably connect power cables.
The design optimizes many features, resulting in a robust connector that can solve a common problem associated with compression connectors – thermal runaway – which contributes to the failure of many insulation systems.
The primary offering includes six range-taking splice connectors, accommodating a wide range of aluminum and copper conductors, from No. 2 to 1000 kcmil, with additional sizes available upon request. ShearBolt connectors are designed to be compatible with Tyco Electronics' Raychem cable accessories and insulation products.
The connector design also incorporates shear head bolts for proper torque on each bolt. Consequently, the optimal contact force is generated to minimize connection resistance. The bolts are engineered to shear at a pre-determined torque, providing a consistent and controlled compression force on the conductor and minimizing connection resistance.
Tyco's energy division has also introduced a new Cold Shrinkable Joint (CSJ) that allows wind farm contractors to install joints in the field quickly, according to the company.
Each silicone joint body is factory-tested to include AC withstand and partial discharge to ensure integrity of installation in accordance to IEEE-404 standards. The CSJs splice electrical power cables rated up to 35 kV and 1250 kcmil, and they can be direct-buried.
