Toshiba has announced a $36 million investment in South Korea-based wind turbine manufacturer Unison Co. Ltd., marking the behemoth electronics company's entrance into the wind industry.

Unison, which was established in 1984, currently manufactures 750 kW and 2 MW permanent-magnet direct-drive wind turbines and is engaged in expanding its product line to include a turbine rated 3 MW or higher. The company maintains a manufacturing facility in Sacheon, South Korea, that has an annual output exceeding 1 GW.

With the new collaboration, Toshiba has earned rights to distribute Unison's turbines worldwide through its various subsidiaries. Toshiba will also help Unison develop new wind turbine technologies that are based on the company's long experience in steam-turbine generators.
