Siemens has shipped a 49-meter blade – the first manufactured from its Tillsonburg, Ont.-based plant – to the site of the South Kent wind project, located in Chatham-Kent, Ont.
The ‘made in Canada’ blade is the first of 372 such blades to be used for the 270 MW wind farm, part of an agreement between the company, Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy Group.
The shipment represents a milestone for Siemens in Canada, specifically in Ontario, where the company has made significant investments in recent years, including the establishment of the Tillsonburg facility in 2010.
The 253,000 square-foot Tillsonburg plant was a former Magna International location that originally opened in 1975 and had been vacant since 2008. Since then, Siemens has retrofitted the wind turbine production facility, which now houses more than 200 employees.
