SC Johnson – the maker of household products such as Windex, Glade, Pledge and Raid – says it will install two wind turbines at Waxdale, its Mt. Pleasant, Wis.-based global manufacturing plant.
The company expects the wind turbines to generate approximately 8 GWh of electricity per year and be operational by the end of this year. The turbines are expected to be approximately 415 feet high. The company did not specify the turbine's make or model.
When completed, SC Johnson says the wind turbines will enable it to generate, on average, 60% of it coming from renewable sources.
This is not the company's first foray into wind energy. A 2010 pilot program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions led to the installation of three mini-wind turbines at the company's Racine, Wis.-based corporate headquarters. In 2009, the company erected a 262 ft. wind turbine to help power its European manufacturing facility in the Netherlands, the company says.
