Reid Plans To Introduce Major Transmission Bill

At the National Clean Energy Project at the Newseum in Nevada, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he will soon introduce a bill that will make it easier to carry renewable energy from remote locations to urban centers in need of power. This bill is expected to chart a better path to a cleaner and smarter national transmission policy, without sacrificing reliability or affordability, he added.

‘Our goal must be to use less oil tomorrow than we use today, and even less the day after,’ Reid said. ‘We can get there, but only if we make major investments now in clean energy, like natural gas and electric vehicles and much more efficient fleets – and all produced right here in America and with American jobs.’

The bill would require the president to designate renewable energy zones with significant clean energy generating potential. A massive planning effort will begin in all the interconnection areas of the country to maximize the use of that renewable potential by building new transmission capacity. If that process falters, then the federal government would be given clear authority to keep it going and get that new transmission built on schedule, according to Reid.

Reid pointed out that his home state and other parts of the desert southwest have enough solar energy potential to power the U.S. seven times over. In addition, he says that wind from the Great Plains and the hundreds of thousands of megawatts of geothermal could power the entire U.S. for many generations to come.
