Oil and gas company Statoil is planning to deploy a large-scale floating offshore wind turbine off Maine's coast, the Bangor Daily News reports.
According to the newspaper, the company submitted a commercial lease application to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to conduct a full assessment of environmental impacts, wind speeds and seabed conditions in a 22-square-mile area of ocean located about 12 nautical miles offshore of the Boothbay area.
The wind turbines would be floating and tethered to anchors on the sea floor, not embedded in the ocean bed, according to the lease application.
