The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has appointed Thomas J. Rumsey vice president of external affairs. He will be responsible for directing the NYISO's media relations and communications programs, governmental and regulatory affairs, and support for the stakeholder committees of the NYISO's shared governance process.
An executive with GE since 2001, Rumsey most recently served as communications leader for GE Power & Water in Schenectady, N.Y. He had previously served as vice president of communications for GE's nuclear energy business in Wilmington, N.C., and was director of headquarters and acquisition communications for GE Energy in Atlanta.
Rumsey is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, with over 16 years of leadership experience as a commissioned military officer. He commanded elite-armed reconnaissance helicopter and special operations units, most recently with a special operations task force in Afghanistan.
He has degrees from the University of Maryland and the University of North Dakota.
