U.K.-based manufacturer David Brown says it has signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to design, develop and manufacture a new gear system for the next generation of offshore wind turbines.
The contract is the first part of a long-term supply collaboration between David Brown and SHI. Under the agreement, David Brown will design a new 7 MW wind turbine gearbox specifically configured to optimize SHI's wind turbine generator as a whole, according to the companies.
Consulting firm Ricardo has also signed on to support activities covering concept review, dynamic analysis, validation of detailed component and system analyses, assistance to the drivetrain rig and field testing in order to facilitate the final certification process.
