Moventas Offers Up-Tower Repairs For Siemens 2.3 MW Turbines

Finland-based wind gearbox manufacturer and service provider Moventas is now offering a new up-tower repair capability for Siemens 2.3 MW turbines in North America.

Following its recently announced GE 1.5 MW repair capability, Moventas says all failed low-speed planetary stage gears and bearings in Siemens 2.3 MW turbines can now be repaired up-tower.
Similar to a GE 1.5 up-tower repair, this new capability for the Siemens turbine can save wind farm owners significant downtime and expenses, says Moventas, which adds that the gearbox can now be repaired up-tower at a price that is a fraction of that associated with changing out the gearbox completely.

According to Moventas, the new repair process has already been successfully demonstrated on the gearboxes in Siemens 2.3 MW turbines. In each repair, customers can opt to upgrade the boxes up-tower from through-hardened ring wheels to case-carburized ring wheels and integrated planet wheel bearings.
