Moventas Completes Validation Testing For FusionDrive

After eight months of testing and verification, wind gear manufacturer Moventas says it has completed drivetrain testing for a gear and generator concept.

Called FusionDrive, the product enables higher drivetrain efficiency due to a better power curve and overall efficiency. It has a lower drivetrain mass and requires less material and its compact design allows for a lighter overall turbine layout.

Produced in conjunction with permanent magnet generator supplier The Switch, the company notes the product was made for DeWind.

According to Moventas, the concept shows great potential for up-tower repairs, which reduce maintenance and repair costs and also decreases the levelized cost of energy by 6% compared with a 3 MW onshore turbine with a conventional drivetrain.
