Windar Photonics, a London-based provider of LIDAR systems for wind turbines, has named John Weston its non-executive chairman. The company says the appointment comes ahead of its planned initial public offering on the Alternative Investment Market.

Weston has served as a non-executive chairman of several listed and private-equity-backed technology companies since he stepped down from his role as chief executive of BAE Systems in 2002. He spent 32 years at the defense technology company and its predecessors, having joined British Aircraft Corp. as an apprentice engineer in 1970. Weston is currently non-executive chairman of Accesso PLC, MB Aerospace PLC, and Fibercore PLC.

"We are delighted to welcome John to Windar," says Martin Rambusch, CEO of Windar. "He has a wealth of public-market and business experience, and he will provide valuable support to the senior management team in this next phase of the company's evolution. The IPO marks an important stage in Windar's development, and I look forward to working with John as we take Windar forward as a listed company."
