German Research Institute Works To Advance Wind Turbine Performance

MTS Systems Corp., a supplier of test systems and position sensors, has announced it will collaborate with GE Power Conversion to supply a simulation system to Germany-based RWTH Aachen University for its Center for Wind Power Drives (CWD).

MTS says the RWTH Aachen University will use this equipment in an effort to advance wind turbine performance. The university will integrate an MTS non-torque loading system and GE Prime Mover into its new 4 MW CWD. Scheduled to come online in fall 2014, the system will replicate forces impacting full-scale onshore wind turbine drivetrains.

"Simulating transient weather events, such as hurricane-force wind gusts, will allow the researchers to study the potential for damage to drivetrains and evaluate mitigation strategies," says Rich Baker, senior vice president of MTS Test. "Ultimately, this will result in more reliable turbines and lower operating costs.’
