Gamesa says its 2 MW turbine has passed the 15,000 MW milestone. Since the initial 2 MW turbine was installed in Spain in 2002, the company says that 7,500 wind turbines have been installed worldwide.
According to Gamesa, the 2 MW turbine provides developers with more competitive ratios in terms of investment per installed MW and cost per unit of energy produced, thanks to the versatility afforded by combining a turbine with a unit capacity of 2 MW with blades that come in five widths – diameters of 80, 87, 90, 97 and 114 meters – paving the way for optimal performance no matter the site or wind conditions.
Based on the success of the 2 MW platform, Gamesa has developed a new 2.5 MW wind turbine with a 114-meter rotor.
The longer blade for medium wind speed sites will produce more energy at a lower investment per MW installed and at a lower maintenance cost per MWh produced, the company notes.
