innogy Consulting, a global energy-focused management consulting firm, has announced the appointment of Macky McCleary, former administrator for Rhode Island’s Division of Public Utilities, as a new partner for its U.S. subsidiary based in Boston.
While serving the people of Rhode Island, McCleary oversaw the overhaul of the state’s electricity grid to integrate high levels of intermittent renewable energy. He was also part of a team that led the state’s 2018 plan to install over 400 MW of clean energy in support of a goal of 1,000 MW by 2020.
McCleary also served as deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Energy, where he led the state’s efforts to transform its waste disposal and recycling policies and the cleanup of the Housatonic River. Prior to his work in public service, McCleary worked with McKinsey & Co., where he focused on carbon-neutral and sustainability clients, and also founded EmPower Solar, a rooftop solar company based in New York.
“Our electricity system is going through a period of dramatic change. Rapid increases in renewable penetration have been driven by a combination of rapidly falling renewables prices and increasing consensus around carbon policy,” says McCleary. “As a result, the demands on utilities are rapidly evolving. These changes are both a threat to the existing business model and an enormous opportunity. As utilities and regulators attempt to adapt to the rapidly changing environment, they will need reliable, strategic, transactional and regulatory support to achieve their goals. I’m very excited to join innogy Consulting and leverage two decades of industry experience to provide that support. We can help.”
Dr. Klaus Grellmann, managing director of innogy Consulting, adds, “Energy markets around the world are undergoing a stunning transformation, and the United States is a central driver in that change. As we set out to provide guidance to our clients on how to navigate the future of power delivery, Macky’s deep experience as a regulator, entrepreneur and agent of change will help strengthen our already impressive offering in the U.S. We are very pleased to welcome him.”
