Yvo de Boer will resign as executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), effective July 1. He will be joining the consultancy group KPMG as a global adviser on climate and sustainability and will work with a number of universities.

‘It was a difficult decision to make, but I believe the time is ripe for me to take on a new challenge, working on climate and sustainability with the private sector and academia,’ says de Boer. ‘I have always maintained that while governments provide the necessary policy framework, the real solutions must come from business.’

de Boer will help negotiations move forward ahead of the Climate Change Conference that is scheduled to take place this November in Mexico.

de Boer was appointed executive secretary of the UNFCCC in September 2006. Before tha, he was extensively involved in European Union environmental policy as deputy director general of the Dutch Environment Ministry. de Boer has also served as vice chair of the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development, acted as an advisor to the government of China and the World Bank and worked closely with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development.
