The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Center for Resource Solutions have named the winners for the 2007 Green Power Leadership Awards, recognizing advances in developing renewable electricity sources.
Baltimore-based Constellation NewEnergy, a subsidiary of Constellation Energy, received the Green Power Supplier Award for successfully incorporating green power into the overall energy portfolio for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). Constellation worked with Edison Mission Group to build a 30 MW wind power project. At the beginning of next year, WSSC will receive 85% of the wind project's power and renewable energy credits output.
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) was awarded Green Power Leadership Awards for two initiatives, including the Clif Bar and SkiGreen partnership and the Western Washington Green Power Campaign. Leveraging the power of Clif Bar's sponsorship, BEF's SkiGreen program earned a Green Power Pilot award for its efforts to negate the snow sports industry's environmental impacts. The Western Washington Green Power Campaign earned a Green Power Beacon award in recognition of its collaboration between diverse parties – combining efforts of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation with four regional utilities to promote awareness of green power opportunities throughout the region.
For a second year in a row, Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the municipal electric utility for Santa Clara, Calif., won a Green Power Program of the Year award for Santa Clara Green Power, SVP's 100% renewable energy option. Participation in Santa Clara Green Power costs customers $0.015 per kWh above the standard electricity rate. Businesses may purchase renewable green power for 100% of their energy use or buy blocks of 1,000 kWh for $15 each.
