The Ontario Power Authority has granted a construction permit to China Longyuan Power to begin building a 100 MW wind farm in Ontario, marking its first foray into the global wind power market. Moreover, this deal also marks the first time a government-owned power generation enterprise is investing in an overseas new energy project.
Construction for the Longyuan Canada wind power project will begin in early August, with commercial operation occuring in the first quarter of 2014.
China Longyuan Power signed an equity acquisition agreement with Canada Melanchthon Electric Power Co. on July 13, 2011. Longyuan says it overcame numerous difficulties over two years.
In order to begin construction immediately, Longyuan Canada notes it also put out bids for project construction, acquired land, secured financing and coordinated with local communities.
Domestically, the Longyuan Canada wind power project was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission to invest outside the country in July, 2012.
