Manassas, Va.-based technology firm Catch the Wind Inc. has introduced the Vindicator, a laser-based wind sensor system capable of sensing wind speed and direction at a distance. The Vindicator uses aerospace technology to provide advance control information to wind turbines, allowing the turbines to react to changing wind conditions.
‘This technology will bring wind power to a whole new level of efficiency and profitability,’ says Philip Rogers, CEO of Catch the Wind. ‘It's the first practical technology that can sense the wind 300 meters in front of wind turbines, which will allow them time to adjust before the wind arrives.’
Weighing about 50 pounds, the Vindicator has three laser beams that create a three-dimensional picture of the wind. Only the sensor lenses sit on top of the turbine. All laser and control electronics are positioned at ground level.
