Wind Center Offers Free Certification Training

The North American Wind Research and Training Center at Mesalands Community College is offering free training for an occupational certificate in basic wind energy technology.

The 12-week program is intended for New Mexico residents who meet specific qualifications, including displaced workers, veterans and qualified spouses of veterans, or individuals who qualify as low-income, according to Mesalands Community College.

Mesalands says students in the program will learn wind turbine technology, turbine maintenance, tower safety and wind economics. Course topics include studies in electricity, hydraulics and mechanics, along with hands-on training on the program's 1.5 MW wind turbine, located adjacent to the wind center.

The certification program was made possible by a $523,751 grant to provide workforce development for state workers seeking a career in the wind industry.

Classes begin Feb. 13.
