Vancouver, British Columbia-based Western Wind Energy has received unanimous consent from the Kern County board of supervisors for the zoning approval of its 120 MW Windstar wind energy project in Tehachapi, Calif.
Western Wind has a 20-year power purchase agreement to supply Southern California Edison with approximately 400 million kWh of energy annually. The contract is worth more than C$700 million and is expected to average C$35 million per year once in production, according to the company. The total cost of the project is expected to be C$270 million.
Western Wind has completed all necessary archaeological, biological, soils analysis and visual impact studies, which concluded the project would cause no significant impact.
In 2006, Western Wind applied to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for transmission line access of 50 MW to 120 MW and on March 15, 2007, was granted access to the full 120 MW.
