U.K. Government Funds Research To Cut Costs Of Offshore Wind

0

The U.K. Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) has announced 2.5 million British pounds (approximately $4 million) in new government investment aimed at developing technologies to cut the cost of offshore wind energy.

Under the Offshore Wind Component Technologies Scheme, the following four companies will receive a share of the funding:

– Ricardo UK Ltd. was awarded 634,980 British pounds to develop and demonstrate its Offshore Wind Drivetrain Innovation technologies, which the DECC says are expected to increase the reliability and lifetime of drivetrains for large offshore wind systems.

– Nottingham-based TetraFloat Ltd. was awarded 134,000 British pounds to validate and improve a novel floating platform design.

– Blade Dynamics Ltd. was awarded 842,630 British pounds to design, evaluate, build and test an innovative composite wind turbine hub. The DECC says this will reduce the loads on the entire turbine, tower and foundation.

– SSE Renewables UK Ltd. was awarded a grant of 1 million British pounds for its National Offshore Wind Turbine Test Facility project. Among other things, the DECC says this will test foundations, logistics and grid integration on Siemens' 6 MW pre-production turbine.
