TransAlta Named To DJSI For Third Year

Calgary, Alberta-based utility TransAlta Corp. has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for a third consecutive year. TransAlta is one of 22 Canadian companies on the index.

Inclusion in the DJSI is granted to companies that lead their industries toward sustainability by setting standards for best practice, and demonstrating superior environmental, social and economic performance.

‘We're very gratified to be recognized as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index,’ says TransAlta president & CEO, Steve Snyder. ‘Recognition and validation of our sustainability practices highlight our commitment to building a sustainable company that continually creates value for our shareowners. TransAlta's long-term business model focuses on delivering steady returns in a capital intensive, commodity-price sensitive business.’

Steps that the utility has taken include:

– reducing its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 12% through operational improvements and renewables growth,

– advancing the development of wind energy in Canada, and

– investing more than $6 million (in 2007) to support sustainability in the communities in which the utility operates.
