W. Kevin Hughes, chairman of the Maryland Public Service Commission (MSC), has announced his departure from the commission at the end of his term on June 30.

Hughes was first appointed to the PSC in September 2011 by then-Gov. Martin O’Malley, who elevated Hughes to chairman in January 2013 to replace Douglas R.M. Nazarian.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has announced the appointment of Jason M. Stanek as incoming chair of the PSC. Stanek most recently served as senior counsel to the Energy Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Committee. Prior to that, he served 16 years in progressively senior positions in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

“It has been a great honor to serve the citizens of Maryland as chair of the PSC for the
past five-and-a-half years,” says Hughes.

Hughes points particularly to the commission’s milestones in renewable energy:

“I am proud of the many accomplishments the commission has achieved during this time, including improved reliability for electric customers, significant investments in aging gas pipeline infrastructure, and nation-leading clean energy programs such as community solar and offshore wind,” he says.

“Likewise, I’m proud of the commission’s grid modernization efforts, which will help ensure that Marylanders have access to affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable energy for years to come,” Hughes adds. “Most of all, I want to thank the dedicated and talented men and women of the Public Service Commission for the extraordinary work they do on behalf of the citizens of our state.”

During his tenure as chairman, Hughes served as a member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) board of directors and the NARUC Committee on Electricity. He also served on the executive board of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
