Texas Tech University has announced the National Wind Institute (NWI), which will combine the university's Texas Wind Energy Institute (TWEI) and former Wind Science and Engineering (WiSE) research center.

According to a Texas Tech Today report, TWEI offers the only Bachelor of Science degree in wind energy, and WiSE established the first doctorate degree in wind engineering and science. Texas Tech University is combining the two institutes in an effort to further interdisciplinary research and development of wind-energy-related technology, the report adds.

"Texas Tech's wind research and educational opportunities have always been interdisciplinary," said Michael San Francisco, Texas Tech interim vice president of research. "The establishment of NWI builds on Texas Tech's commitment to transdisciplinary research and will provide a better foundation for collaboration and support for our wind efforts."
