The U.S. only saw one wind farm, comprising about 43 MW, enter service in the third quarter, meaning the country has installed a total 432 MW of wind capacity so far this year, according to a new analysis from SNL Energy. Last year, the U.S. reached a record high of 13.1 GW of new installed capacity.
However, SNL says that as many in the wind sector work to take advantage of the extended production tax credit, 7,562 MW of U.S. wind is currently under construction or in advanced development.
According to the analysis, the 42.7 MW unit of Pattern Energy's 265 MW Ocotillo wind farm was the only wind capacity to come online in the third quarter. The project, located in Imperial County, Calif., started up operations of the first approximately 223 MW in December 2012. The project's remaining 18 additional turbines began generating power in July 2013.
