Siemens Energy has secured an order for 80 wind turbines for an offshore wind project in Germany. The 288 MW Meerwind project, to be located in the North Sea, will use Siemens 3.6 MW turbines.
The customer is WindMW GmbH, whose shareholders are funds managed by Blackstone and Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH. The company, which is located in Bremerhaven, is responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the project.
According to Siemens, the project will supply energy for approximately 400,000 households after its expected commissioning in 2013. This is Siemens' sixth order for an offshore wind project in German waters.
Siemens will be responsible for supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines. In addition, the company has signed a five-year service, maintenance and warranty agreement.
The wind turbines will be installed over an area of 42 square km and at water depths ranging between 22 meters and 26 meters.
