Cleantech venture investment in the second quarter of this year (2Q'11) fell 33% compared to the previous quarter ($2.75 billion) and was also 10% lower than in 2Q'10 ($2.03 billion), according to an analysis released by the Cleantech Group.
The number of deals recorded in 2Q'11 was 161, compared to 174 in 1Q'11. Of these deals, 66% (106) were Series B or later rounds, accounting for 87% ($1.59 billion) of all money invested during the quarter.
Clean technology venture investments in North America, Europe, China and India for 2Q'11 totaled $1.83 billion across 161 deals. North America accounted for 77% of the total, while Europe and Israel accounted for 17% and Asia and the Pacific region for 6%.
North American companies raised $1.42 billion, down 37% from 1Q'11 and down 10% from the same period a year ago.
In North America, California led the way with $611 million investment (43% share), followed by Massachusetts ($191 million, 13%) and Texas (108 million, 8%).
