The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has adopted a stipulation that establishes a competitively bid market-based standard service office and creates a green pricing option for customers of Akron, Ohio-based energy company FirstEnergy.
The Green Resource Program will be established through FirstEnergy's purchase of renewable energy certificates (REC) at prices determined through a PUCO-monitored competitive bidding process. Customers will pay the same rates and riders as non-participants – plus a Green Resource tariff rider price for each 100 kWh block purchased, PUCO explains. FirstEnergy will provide customers with information on the Green Resource Program through a bill insert.
‘We are pleased that FirstEnergy customers will have the opportunity to support the development of alternative energy resources through their participation in this program,’ says Alan R. Schriber, chairman of PUCO. ‘This is an important early step toward more widespread use of environmentally friendly sources of electricity.’
