Project Icebreaker Selects American Tank & Fabricating

Cleveland-based American Tank & Fabricating (AT&F) says it will provide monopile fabrication services for Project Icebreaker, the demonstration offshore wind project planned off the coast of Cleveland.

AT&F says it was selected for its track record of fabricating monopiles, which is required for offshore wind farms.

The project's developer, Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo), says the monopile design will catalyze domestic manufacturing growth by removing the barriers to entry faced by U.S.-based steel fabricators that want to supply foundations for the offshore wind industry. In fact, the design led to a $2.8 million award by the U.S. Department of Energy.

‘This will be the first monopile foundation designed from the ground up to be built by American companies and installed in American waters,’ says Lorry Wagner, president of LEEDCo.
