A brand-new vessel carrying more than 2,000 tons of wind energy cargo arrived in the Port of Longview, Wash., last week, representatives from the port have announced.
The vessel, called Star Laguna, brought 48 wind tower sections from Korea that will be used for the Meadow Creek wind project in Idaho. The largest of these wind towers are over 23 meters long and weigh approximately 70 metric tons.
According to the port's representatives, the Port of Longview had experienced a nearly two-year lull in wind cargo imports but has seen a strong surge this year.
The Star Laguna is one of more than 40 vessels in the Grieg Star shipping line. The vessel features nine open-hatch cargo holds – opposed to the standard five – and was built for faster and safer project cargo handling, the Port of Longview says.
