Toronto-based Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has announced that it is taking steps toward doubling the province's supply of green electricity. By 2025, the goal is to have 15,700 MW of renewable power online, double the amount in 2005.
The OPA unveiled a schedule for three imminent large-scale procurements and another standard offer program, totaling more than 1,100 MW in new renewable energy. These will include the addition of 600 MW of renewable projects and more than 500 MW of clean energy and combined heat and power projects.
The OPA also unveiled proposed changes to its renewable energy standard offer program (SOP) to ensure that it continues to offer opportunities for projects such as wind, solar, biomass and water power projects under 10 MW, to contribute renewable power to Ontario's grid.
‘The response to this program for small renewable energy projects has been incredible,’ says Ontario Minister of Energy Gerry Phillips. ‘We are committed to expanding on that success by creating new opportunities for renewable energy and improving accessibility to the grid across the province.’
