Physicians and nurses from Ontario plan to launch an advertising campaign to defend wind and solar power, the Toronto Star reports. The ads will be sponsored by the Ontario College of Family Physicians, Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, Asthma Society of Canada and Ontario Lung Association.
Ontario's Liberal government has promised to shut coal plants by 2014. But the government could change with the fall election, making this pledge uncertain, says Gideon Forman, spokesperson for the ad campaign. The groups running the ads would like to see the coal plants phased out even earlier than 2014, Forman says.
Ads will run in western Ontario and Niagara newspapers. The Ontario College of Family Physicians has 10,000 members, and the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario has 31,000 members.
