Seattle-based Destination Lighting, an online lighting and home decor retailer, has partnered with TerraPass, a supplier of carbon credits, to include between one and five years of carbon offsets for nearly all of the lighting fixtures and other energy-consuming products it sells on its Web site.
Destination Lighting has calculated the national annual average usage of about 90% of their online products. Combining that with the maximum energy consumption of a product, they can determine the average annual carbon footprint of energy-consuming products and display this information on its Web site.
All funds generated through Destination Lighting's purchase of carbon credits will go toward research and development of green energy technologies, including wind power.
