Officials, Organizations Support Offshore Wind In Letter To Obama

A group of 122 environmentalists, conservationists and elected officials has sent a letter to President Obama urging support for the swift development of offshore wind along the Atlantic seaboard while ensuring strong environmental safeguards. The letter asserts that federal leadership is critical for advancing this clean energy source.

‘For the sake of our environment and the hope of building a truly clean energy economy in America, we must see numerous wind farms spinning off our shores within the next few years – and we need your help to make that vision a reality,’ the letter states.

The letter urges a quick transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The group states that untapped offshore wind potential along the Atlantic coast can play an increasingly important role in getting the region and the nation off of fossil fuels.

The letter specifically asked for the administration to set a bold goal for offshore wind development and then rapidly pursue a process to arrive at that goal without skipping any environmental reviews or protections.

‘Offshore wind alone has the potential to power America four times over,’ says Sean Garren, clean energy advocate for Environment America, one of the groups that signed the letter. ‘By harnessing the vast, untapped wind resources off our coast, we can reduce global-warming emissions, create well-paid local jobs, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.’
