OCAS Inc. has announced that its wind turbine obstacle collision avoidance system is being utilized at the Talbot wind project, which recently achieved commercial operation in Ontario.
The OCAS solution utilizes patented radar technology mounted on select turbine towers to detect approaching aircraft and activates the turbine aviation strobe lights for a primary visual warning as required by Transport Canada.
The system keeps the lights off at all times unless an aircraft approaches the wind turbines. If the aircraft does not take measures to avoid the turbines, a secondary audio warning is delivered to the pilot's very high frequency radio, according to the company.
The 98 MW project was developed by RES Canada and utilizes Siemens wind turbines.
