Vancouver, British Columbia-based NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. has completed the 45-day public comment phase for the review of its application for an environmental assessment certificate.

The NaiKun Wind project is planned for Hecate Strait, an area off the northwest coast of British Columbia, where 110 wind turbines are expected to generate renewable energy. Power from the project will be used by BC Hydro to help meet the province's growing energy needs.

NaiKun Wind's application was recently received by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, and the 180-day application review phase began May 20. The 45-day period for public input began May 28.

Open houses held in Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte City and Masset were well attended, and constructive feedback regarding the project has been submitted to the provincial Environmental Assessment Office.

NaiKun Wind will respond to all comments and prepare a summary report of the consultation results by Aug. 3. The responses and the report will be posted to the Environmental Assessment Office's Web site, eao.gov.

A concurrent review of the project by the Haida Nation is under way to evaluate the potential effects of the project relating to the environment, traditional use and culture of the Haida people and lands. NaiKun Wind anticipates completion of both processes by the end of the year.
