Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. says it might build a wind turbine plant in Fort Smith, Ark., according to a Reuters report. Mitsubishi's plans call for a wind turbine manufacturing plant to be built, with an investment cost of $100 million.
‘We'll make a final investment decision after seeing how demand recovers – probably in the second half of the 2010 financial year,’ says a spokesman for the company.
Mitsubishi holds about 7% of the U.S. wind turbine market. The company sells about $1.1 billion worth of wind turbines a year, with 80% to 90% of them sold in the U.S.
GE, the biggest wind turbine maker in the U.S., recently lost a case against Mitsubishi, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission, over turbine patents.
