Des Moines, Iowa-headquartered MidAmerican Energy Co. has received regulatory approval from the Iowa Utilities Board to add up to 540 MW of new wind energy generation to its portfolio.

The company plans to install 50 additional wind turbines at a project being constructed by enXco Development Corp. at MidAmerican Energy's wind project site in Pocahontas County in north-central Iowa. This wind farm, which originally consisted of 82 GE 1.5-MW wind turbines, is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year.

The combination of the company's existing wind turbines and planned wind expansion would bring the percentage of MidAmerican Energy electric generation capacity from renewable energy sources to approximately 18%, the company adds.
