MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has finalized the details of the first commercial order for the massive V164-8.0 MW offshore wind turbine.

According to MHI Vestas, Dong Energy will purchase 32 V164-8.0 MW turbines for its 258 MW Burbo Bank Extension project, located off the coast of Liverpool Bay, U.K. NAW reported the deal last August.

The order includes supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a five-year, full-scope service contract. Installation is expected to begin in 2016 with commissioning to follow in 2017.

MHI Vestas, which is leasing one of two production halls located at Vestas' blades technology center on the Isle of Wight, says it will begin production on Jan. 1, 2015.

The Vestas facility opened in 2011 and was specifically designed to develop large blades for wind turbines. The facility consists of a testing and verification center and a blade production area, the company notes.
