Tucumcari, N.M.-based Mesalands Community College says it has received a $5,000 grant from Xcel Energy to use toward scholarships for students pursuing a degree in wind energy technology at the North American Wind Research and Training Center.

Xcel awards foundation grants in four areas: education, economic stability, art and culture, and environmental stewardship. Mesalands was awarded a foundation grant in the area of education, after preparing a letter of intent that described its proposal.

The college has received over $20,000 in grants from Xcel since 2005. The grant will fund five $1,000 scholarships for students in the school's wind energy technology program.

"We appreciate Xcel's efforts in continuing to invest in education and in renewable energy," says Dr. Mildred Lovato, president of Mesalands Community College. "This grant will assist more of our wind energy technology students in funding their college education as they obtain invaluable hands-on training at the North American Wind Research and Training Center."
