Maryland Wind Project Receives CPCN Exemption

The Maryland Public Service Commission has granted Dan's Mountain Wind Force LLC a certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) exemption. This will allow construction and operation of a 25-turbine wind farm near Frostburg, Md. The 60 MW project is estimated to produce more than 157,000 MWh annually. The project is being developed by US Wind Force LLC.

‘This is another important step forward for this $142 million project that will offer tremendous economic development opportunities for western Maryland,’ says Tom Matthews, president of US Wind Force. ‘It will create 150 to 200 much-needed construction jobs, a small number of permanent operations and maintenance jobs, and inject, on average, more than $400,000 in property-tax revenues into Allegany County.’

The project must meet minor conditions, including that the developer continue to work with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and work to address communications tower issues.

The next step in the process will be for the project to obtain the necessary land-use permits from Allegheny County. The application is currently under review.
