egion State College (LRSC), located in Devils Lake, N.D., has received a $65,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety training for the wind industry. The funding will be used to design an OSHA-compliant short course that can be transported to wind energy work sites for training and certification of wind energy technicians. At the conclusion of training, wind energy technicians will be able to identify key safety-related work practices around or on wind turbines that must be followed to ensure their safety and well-being on the work site. TrainND, the workforce training division of LRSC, will combine with the wind energy technician program in order to develop and deliver the OSHA training. In related news, LRSC plans to expand its wind energy technician program this fall. Twenty-four students will be accepted into the program, up from 17 last fall. ‘We have a waiting list of students who want to enter this career, and we expect all of our graduates will be able to find employment as wind development expands,’ says Doug Darling, vice president of instructional services at LRSC. The school's wind energy technician program offers a one-year certificate and a two-year associate of applied science degree. SOURCE: Lake Region State
