Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission has given unanimous final development plan approval to Calgary, Alberta-based TransCanada Corp. for the Kibby Wind Power Project. Construction plans are now under way for the 132 MW wind project located in Kibby and Skinner townships in northwestern Franklin County, Maine.
The project will involve the construction of 44 3 MW wind turbine generators and will employ up to 250 people during the 12 to 18 month construction period. The capital cost of the project is approximately $320 million.
Electricity generated from the facility will be sold to customers through a combination of short- and long-term contracts. TransCanada has sold a portion of the power and renewable energy credits to buyers in the New England market.
The project recently received approval from the towns of Carrabassett Valley and Eustis for portions of the 115 kV transmission line that will connect the project to the ISO New England electrical grid. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued all necessary project permits and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to issue a permit soon.
TransCanada expects to begin construction later this summer.
