Iowa State University (ISU) will offer a new wind energy Ph.D. program, the Iowa State Daily reports.

The Faculty Senate has approved the program, which could launch as early as spring 2013, ISU says.

Last fall, the university received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to help fund the new program, which ISU says will help to educate students on all aspects of wind energy and prepare them for careers in the industry.

Iowa currently ranks second in the nation in wind power capacity, with 4.524 GW online, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
