Sunflower Electric Power Corp. and Infinity Wind Power LLC have announced a 20-year contract for 104 MW of wind energy from Infinity's Shooting Star Wind Project, to be located near Mullinville, Kan.
The contract was signed by Mid-Kansas Electric Co. LLC, which was formed in 2005 by five of Sunflower's members and a wholly owned subsidiary. Infinity recently purchased the development rights for the Shooting Star Wind Project from Clipper Windpower LLC, which began developing the project in 2001.
According to the companies, the addition of this power purchase agreement brings the combined Sunflower system's net renewable generation capacity to 29% of retail peak demand. This exceeds the state's renewable portfolio standard, which requires electric utilities to have at least 15% of their peak demand from renewable resources by 2016.
The companies expect the wind farm to be operational by the end of 2012.
