Grupo Bimbo, a Mexico-based baking company, has announced the start of construction for the Piedra Larga wind farm in Union Hidalgo, Oaxaca. When completed, the wind farm is expected to generate almost all of the electrical power consumed by Grupo Bimbo in Mexico.
With an installed power of 90 MW, the farm will be able to supply the electric power consumed by 65 of the company's facilities (production plants and other operation centers). The project is expected to begin operating by the end of 2011. Grupo Bimbo has also invited Grupo Calidra, Frialsa Frigorificos and Papalote Museo del Nino to participate in the project.
The wind farm was made possible thanks to an alliance fostered by the government of Mexico, the private sector and banks, according to the company. The operation of the wind farm will be possible through the partnership of Grupo Bimbo with DEMEX, an affiliate of the Spanish company Renovalia Energy.
